Ton Up For Wyatt

In what must be the 50-over innings of the summer, played on a pitch that was low and slow in the main, Danni Wyatt showed a maturity well beyond her years.  Wickets fell at a steady rate during the Sussex innings, with others finding the conditions difficult to master, although most managed cameos. Against some excellent tight bowling from Beth Kerins and some fearfully aggressive deliveries from Nat Sciver, which at time threatened either the batsmen's ankles or ears, and the length gave you little clue as to which, hanging around wasn't easy.

Danni Wyatt celebrates a Ton
Finally finishing on 120* it was, from a spectators point of view, an innings to relish and gave Sussex second spot in the County Championship.

Even Diehard Sussex Supporters felt sorry for Kirstie White who finished on 98* two runs short
of a century she would undoubtedly have made if another over or two had been available

There were valuable contributions from, among others, Paige Scholfield (above) and Chiara Green

Sussex revive the traditional method of receiving your cap, here Ellie Monk
receives hers from captain Georgia Elwiss on the field of play

(If you didn't know that's on the field, at the start of the game - and not half an hour before! - and presented by your captain)

I did find myself wondering recently when an England cap was presented around an hour before the game - "what happens if it rains now and the game is never played?" It would be even worse should the player never be selected again! It is a small chance I know under sunlit skies, but with the tradition dying out it's going to happen sooner or later. Cricket is full of some splendid traditions and I find it sad this one has become neglected.

The scoreboard showing Danni Wyatt's century and an interesting inconsistency

As it's the end of the season perhaps I should mention another thing that has alternately bugged and amused me for some time. Take a look at the top line on the scoreboard. The temptation to ask the scorer why, when the men are playing here it doesn't say "Sussex Men". In his eyes obviously it needs noting as it might for "Sussex Under-15s".  The nonsense of it is somewhat highlighted if you check how many runs Chiara Green made.  I am sure the description doesn't bother her - in fact I doubt she noticed - but it does make a mockery of the top line. As it is a county game - why not just Sussex and Surrey? Or am I trying to push parity with the men too far?
